There are two choices for Power Generation through Bio Mass facilities:
- Conventional Incineration
- Pyrolysis Incineration
What is the difference between Conventional Incineration and Pyrolysis/Gasification?
CONVENTIONAL INCINERATION
Fully converts the input waste into energy and ash, while the process of PYROLYSIS/GASIFICATION deliberately limits the conversion, so that combustion does not take place directly. Pyrolysis/Gasification instead converts the waste into valuable intermediate materials that can be further processed for the purpose of materials recycling and/or energy recovery.
PYROLYSIS:
Thermal degradation of waste in the absence of air to produce char, pyrolysis oil and syngas, e.g. the conversion of wood to charcoal.
GASIFICATION:
The breakdown of hydrocarbons into a syngas by carefully controlling the amount of oxygen present, e.g. the conversion of coal into town gas.
Gasification is the overall outcome for both. In terms of processes which involve Pyrolysis, this process turns waste into energy rich fuels by heating the waste under controlled conditions.
